Department of Emergency and General Medicine

Staff

In order to build a comprehensive regional care system in a super-aging society, it is necessary to train medical personnel to be engaged in emergency care as well as a wide range of general medical care. It is also necessary to support the local community.

This endowed chair was established for the purpose of taking charge of the education and training of medical personnel involved in both emergency and general medical care in Okayama prefecture.

Goals of the department:

  1. To undertake education of ′emergency and general medical doctors’ engaged in emergency and a wide range of general medical care
  2. To continue education for medical personnel supporting regional emergency medical care and general medical care
  3. To continue education to develop human resources that can support a comprehensive regional care system

The current concept of regional medical care is aimed at cooperation between medical institutions in the area to provide sufficient medical services to the residents covering everything from acute to chronic medical conditions.

Okayama prefecture is divided into five medical care regions. However, the number of doctors per capita in the Takahashi/Niimi, Maniwa, and Tsuyama/Aida areas is below the national average. Of the patients who require hospitalization 90% are able to be accommodated in the Southeastern and Southwestern regions of the prefecture, 80% in Tsuyama/Aida region, 70% in Maniwa region, and just 60% in Takahashi/Niimi region.

Furthermore, 90% of emergency hospitalizations can be handled in the Southeastern and Southwestern regions, 80% or more in Tsuyama/Aida region, 60% in Maniwa region, and just 30% in Takahashi/Niimi region. In all five regions, the average emergency transport time is 32 to 34 minutes. We are working to improve these conditions.

It is important to train ′emergency and general medical doctors’ as part of our mission to build a regional medical care system in collaboration with local nurses, medical personnel, and paramedics.

This endowed chair is educating doctors, residents and medical personnel in order to improve the quality of medical care in Okayama prefecture.

We will continue to work systematically to provide high quality education and training for each region according to its needs. Medical professionals will also take educational seminars in the field of regional medical care.
