Department of Pharmacology

Staff

Department of Pharmacology at Kawasaki Medical School has contributed to the field of pharmacology in Japan in both education and research domains. Dr. Murayama, the first professor in the Department, researched on the effects of various drugs on renal function. Dr. Saito, the second professor, was known for his dedication to medical education, and was engaged in the pharmacological study of steroid hormones. Dr. Okuma, the third professor, researched on the biological mechanism of drug dependence. We have taken over these excellent works that were done by these previous professors and have developed the Department of Pharmacology.

Pharmacology deals with the interaction of drugs with the systems and processes of living animals, in particular, the mechanisms of drug action as well as the therapeutic uses of drugs. In our lectures and practices, we provide the students not only the fundamental knowledge of pharmacology, but also train them to develop important skills of making their own decisions in the selection of proper and prompt drug treatments when they become doctors in the future.

For the purposes of drug discovery, we are conducting the following research projects:

  1. The role of lipid mediators in organ fibrosis
  2. Metabolic mechanisms of bioactive lipids, N-acylethanolamines
  3. Elucidation of gender differences in the pathogenesis of diabetic vascular disorder
  4. Exploration of factors regulating unfolded protein response
