Department of Acute Medicine

Staff

Department of acute medicine was established in January 1977 as the first department of emergency and critical care medicine in Japan. The emergency department at Kawasaki Medical School Hospital started in April 1976, it was designated as the first emergency medical service center in Okayama Prefecture in 1979, and advanced emergency medical service center in 1995. It is also the birthplace of doctor-heli (physician and nurse staffed helicopter emergency medical service (EMS) in Japan), which has become widespread as well as an integral part of emergency medicine in Japan today. We accept all emergency patients from mild to severe including those with trauma, burn and poisoning. Furthermore, we have been providing critical care to such patients in ICU. In addition, we also contribute to the education of emergency personnel and the construction of a local emergency medical system.

Against this background, we aim to educate medical students, residents, and fellows with differential diagnosis and life-saving skills, and basic knowledge of emergency medical system that are minimum requirements for doctors. We also teach emergency and critical care for severe illnesses such as multiple trauma, severe burns, acute poisoning, shock, and disturbances of consciousness.

In this department, we also conduct clinical research on emergency and critical care for urgent and severe diseases, such as early diagnosis of sepsis with biomarkers, elucidation of coagulopathy in severe trauma, pathophysiology of acute poisoning, treatment of burn injuries, and effectiveness of doctor-heli system.
