Research interest: There are two assistant professors in this department. One is Shuichiro Okamoto and the other is Kei Miyano, both of whom are working with Professor Yamauchi Akira.

The major of Dr. Okamoto as a hematologist and biochemist is treatments for acute leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. He is now studying the mechanism of how the progenitor leukemic cells dodge intensive chemotherapy in a microenvironment in bone marrow and affect the patient so suddenly beyond a long term period of calm after taking a good long rest. Many doctors have seemed reluctant to face up to the facts thus far. Dr. Okamoto clearly demonstrates a mechanism according to which inhibition of autophagy prevents damage to leukemia cells from anticancer drugs.

Dr. Miyano has been devoted himself to the study of molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of the Nox Family NAD(P)H Oxidases ever since he graduated from university. His papers were published recently, such as, “Methods Mol. Biol. 2019” and “J. Immunol. 2014”. His cooperativity as a leader in molecular biology and broad abilities in the field of cell-biology are such that everyone is eager to study with him, with the result that a lot of different papers have been published such as “J. Biol. Chem. 2019 294:19655-19666”. His new original article titled “NADPH oxidase Nox4 promotes the directed migration of endothelial cells by stabilizing VEGFR-2 protein” was accepted for publication in J. Biol. Chem. on 27th of June in 2020.

Professor Yamauchi has a strong background for cell migration and has published excellent articles on this research subject. He is now under investigation for a new chemo-attractant to modify cell function.
