At Kawasaki Medical School, ophthalmology is divided into two independent departments: Ophthalmology 1 located at Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, and our department (Ophthalmology 2) located at Kawasaki Medical University General Medical Center in the downtown of Okayama city (20km apart). Ophthalmology 2 deals with a wide range of eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma (medical, or not surgical), age-related macular degeneration (medical), neuro-ophthalmology, and common diseases in the anterior segment of the eye.

One of our main academic achievements in the past decade was that that we, alone or in collaboration with other university hospitals, conducted three randomized controlled trials to find a treatment to control myopia development in children. However, the clinical area we are mostly focusing on is strabismus /amblyopia. The strabismus/amblyopia clinic was established in 2013, and currently, four ophthalmologists who have extensive clinical experience in this field and six certified orthoptists work at the clinic. Last year, a total of 5,492 patients with strabismus and amblyopia from all prefectures in Chugoku-Shikoku region, as well as from Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, and Kyushu regions, visited our clinic. We performed 512 strabismus surgeries including the state of the art techniques such as the adjustable suture surgery, Guyton's small incision surgery, graded vertical rectus tenotomy (GVRT), and enhanced (double-under) muscle transposition. We are trying to improve our diagnostic and surgical skills so that we can play a role as one of the hub medical institutions in this medical field.

We work together with Department of Ophthalmology 1 and Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare Department of Orthoptics in Kurashiki city to provide comprehensive education to medical students and resident doctors.
