Our research interests are widespread across the field of rehabilitation medicine, ranging from basic kinesiology to social rehabilitation. We are promoting research in the following areas:
1. Motor dysfunction
We are conducting research on movement ability from basic to clinical aspects. Recent themes in this area include maintenance/improvement of muscular strength by electrical and peripheral magnetic stimulation, gait analysis and development of new gait training devices.
2. Deglutition disorders
Our research aims to establish 1) new evaluation methods for swallowing function using fluoroscopy and ultrasound, and 2) new swallowing training methods using electrical stimulation and magnetic stimulation. We have a special interest in atrophy of swallowing-related muscles secondary to disuse.
3. Respiratory disorders
The main theme in this area is evaluation of respiratory movements. We are investigating chest wall movements in various diseases using a three-dimensional motion analysis system.
4. Higher brain dysfunction
Our hospital is a support stronghold in Okayama prefecture for patients with higher brain dysfunction, and is used by a large number of patients ranging from children to adults.
We are conducting extensive research on higher brain dysfunction, and especially on elucidation of the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, brain functional images, social behavior disorders, and resumption of driving.
5. Community-based rehabilitation
Currently, Community-based Integrated Care System is being promoted in Japan. To lead it to success, involvement of rehabilitation medicine is more important than ever.
We provide lectures on the knowledge and skills from the viewpoint of rehabilitation medicine for professionals engaged in long-term care insurance services, and are investigating their needs.
