The focus of research is on pedagogy in English for medical purposes(EMP) and developing tools for minimizing L1 interference in Japanese healthcare professionals. A growing number of Japanese healthcare institutions are now introducing EMP instruction in curricula. However, a lack of suitable pedagogical approaches and teaching materials and difficulties in pronunciation encountered by the learners are among the major obstacles that need to be overcome for the success of the newly introduced and forthcoming programs.

The research on EMP pedagogy, explores pedagogical approaches and materials that can develop all four language learning skills of the learners. The work on minimizing L1 interference entails developing a set of tools in the form of pronunciation learning and practicing guides to help Japanese students in medicine and allied disciplines minimize interference from their mother tongue and thereby improve their ability to pronounce commonly used and advanced medical terms intelligibly.
