Department of Laboratory Medicine(Endoscopy and Ultrasound)

Staff

The Department of Endoscopy and Ultrasound offers both endoscopic and ultrasound examinations. For diagnosis of the disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, endoscopic procedures employed include upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, small bowel enteroscopy with double balloon catheter, capsule endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasonography. We also perform therapeutic endoscopy procedures such as endoscopic submucosal dissection, and endoscopic mucosal resection. For the hepatobiliary tract, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and therapeutic interventions such as endoscopic lithotripsy and biliary stenting are conducted. For the respiratory tract, bronchoscopy is performed. All of these endoscopic examinations and therapeutic interventions are done by specialists certified by the Japanese academic societies in the respective fields. Thus, safe and sophisticated examinations and therapies are offered.

In our division, all ultrasound examinations, except the cardiac ultrasound, are performed by qualified ultrasound specialists and registered diagnostic medical sonographers. Besides the conventional grayscale and color / power Doppler images, we always use cutting-edge technologies such as the Superb-Microvascular Imaging, Shear Wave Elastography, Contrast Ultrasound, Super-high Frequency probes, and so forth, which enable us to make advanced and absolute diagnoses of a variety of diseases.

The main focus of our studies is ultrasound diagnosis, such as the diagnoses of acute abdomen with contrast ultrasound, the screening and differential diagnosis of the gastrointestinal tract, evaluation gastrointestinal motility with ultrasound, development of new and more effective ultrasound software, and so on.
