Research interests

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Japan. To fight stroke, we keep trying to understand stroke’s pathophysiology and develop more effective treatments. Our research focuses on treatment of acute ischemic stroke, and it’s prognostic factors and prevention.

a) Cryptogenic stroke

There are various causes of ischemic stroke. It is necessary to reveal the causes of stroke to prevent recurrence, and especially to determine the application of antithrombotic therapy. However, there are some cases of ischemic stroke due to unknown causes. We investigate useful biomarkers to distinguish cases requiring anticoagulation therapy.
Our selected publications in this field are: 1) Stroke. 47: 2209-2215, 2016; 2) Stroke. 48: 1074-1076, 2017; 3) J Neurol. 265: 628-636, 2018.

b) Outcome of acute ischemic stroke

Treatment of acute ischemic stroke has made progress. Reperfusion therapy is the most effective treatment. Nevertheless, some patients have bad outcome despite expectation. Understanding factors related to outcome is necessary to develop better therapeutic strategies for treatment of acute ischemic stroke.
Our selected publications in this field are: 1) Cerebrovasc Dis Extra. 9: 107-113, 2019; 2) J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis. 29: 104540, 2020.

c) Imaging diagnosis of cerebro vascular disease

We evaluate the usefulness of imaging, such as MRI, to determine the causes and risk of thromboembolism.
One of our selected publications in this field is: 1) J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis. 28: e71-e72, 2019.

d) Stroke related to other diseases

We investigate possible relation between stroke and other diseases, such as malignancies, myeloproliferative neoplasms, autoimmune diseases and lysosomal diseases.
Our selected publications in this field are: 1) Stroke. 50: 1010-1012, 2019; 2) Stroke. 50: 2571-2573, 2019.
